Yes, absolutely agree with you about the 5x5 LED being a limitation,
particularly with OLED/LCD being so cheap now.

Like codebug the LED matrix means you outgrow it, an LCD would keep it useful for hundreds of tasks.

Yes, it's an esp32 the bigger brother to the 8266:
